Using a spreadsheet to visualize game data

visualizeData

Recently I’ve been helping out doing game design work with  Big Bad Robots on an upcoming iphone/ipad casual game, Wendy’s Weddings. It got to a point where I had to design the customer types along with their data such as how much do they pay, their tips, how long before they lose a heart, how much attention do they require…etc. There needed to be a way for me to understand and see this data, read more to find out how!

There are a total of 48 numerical entries, which make it hard for me to visualize how they work in a game. So what I did was use a spreadsheet to create a line graph. With the different customer types and the relevant data plotted onto a line graph. That way, I could see as the levels progressed how I would design the data.

Using this method to help me visualize the data helped me make better decisions in the way the customer data was set up and I didn’t have to lose my eyesight staring at a spreadsheet full of numbers!
